C-Section Scar Massage: Why Every Mom Should Try It & How to Get Started for Better Healing
Does Massaging Your C-Section Scar Sound Weird? Let’s Talk About It.
If the idea of massaging your C-section scar makes you squirm a little, you’re not alone. A lot of moms avoid touching their scar—whether because it feels weird, they’re afraid of doing something wrong, or let’s be real… they just don’t have the time to think about one more thing in postpartum.
But here’s the truth: C-section scar massage is one of the most powerful (and simple) things you can do to help your body heal properly. Whether your scar is brand new or years old, massage can help improve mobility, reduce discomfort, and even flatten that “C-section shelf” that so many moms struggle with.
So if you’ve ever wondered:
✅ How to safely improve your scar?
✅ What scar massage techniques actually work?
✅ When to start (and how long to keep doing it)?
✅ What to do if your scar still feels numb, painful, or tight?
You’re in the right place. Let’s break it all down and get you started.
Why C-Section Scar Massage Matters for Your Postpartum Recovery
Your scar isn’t just skin deep. A C-section is major abdominal surgery, which means multiple layers of tissue—skin, fascia, muscle—are involved in healing. When scar tissue forms, it can spread out like tree roots and create tightness, restrictions, and even contribute to issues like:
✅ Low back or pelvic pain (due to scar adhesions pulling on surrounding muscles)
✅ Weakened core connection (affecting how your abs engage)
✅ Urinary frequency or constipation (scar tissue can impact organ mobility!)
✅ Pain with movement, exercise, or even sex (adhesions make tissue less flexible)
Scar massage works by breaking up adhesions, increasing circulation, and retraining your brain to feel safe moving this area again. And the best part? It only takes 3-5 minutes a day.

When Should You Start C-Section Scar Massage?
Scar healing happens in phases, and understanding this process helps you care for it at the right time. In the first few weeks, your body is working on sealing and protecting your external incision. By 6-8 weeks, deeper healing is happening, but internal adhesions may be forming. That’s why gentle movement and early scar mobility exercises make such a big difference.
The type of massage you do then depends on how far postpartum you are:
➡️ If you’re newly postpartum (less than 6 weeks): Start with indirect scar massage, focusing on the areas around your scar. Focus on lightly touching the skin around your abdomen, gentle breathing, and movement that encourages flexibility around the incision without actually touching it.
➡️ If your C-section is older (6+ weeks): If given the okay by your provider, you can begin direct scar massage, using hands-on techniques to mobilize the tissue and improve function. Most scars will be externally healed by this point, but keep in mind internal healing takes much longer.

3-Step Beginner-Friendly C-Section Scar Massage Techniques
Ready to give it a try? Start with this simple sequence:
1️⃣ Desensitize the Area – As early as your first week, you can help decrease hypersensitivity and numbness and improve sensation by gently touching soft fabrics (like a feather or cotton ball) around your abdomen (not on your scar!) As the weeks go on you can use “harsher” fabrics.
2️⃣ Start with Gentle Circles – After a few weeks, place your fingers above, below, or around your scar and make slow, gentle circles. Don’t press too hard—you’re encouraging movement, not forcing it. Again, stay off your scar for now.
3️⃣ Mobilize the Scar – Once you get the green light from your provider, you can start direct scar massage. Use side-to-side and up-and-down movements, gently lifting the skin to break up restrictions. If you feel any areas that feel “stuck,” spend a little extra time there, but don’t force it.

Common Mistakes to Avoid When it Comes to Massaging Your C-Section Scar
❌ Going Too Hard, Too Soon – Scar tissue is delicate. Start slow and build up over time.
❌ Ignoring Your Scar Entirely – Avoiding it won’t make the tightness or discomfort go away.
❌ Forcing Through Pain – If it hurts, back off. Start with desensitization before jumping into massage.
