how exercise can support but not guarantee an easier birth blog post with prenatal fitness specialist and doula beth colucci foppiano

Let’s be real: if squats guaranteed a smooth, easy birth, labor units would look more like gyms.

Fitness is powerful—it builds strength, endurance, and resilience—but when it comes to birth, it’s just one part of a much bigger picture.

If you’re wondering how exercise supports birth prep (and where it falls short), stick around. I’m diving into what working out during pregnancy can—and can’t—do when it comes to preparing for your labor and delivery.

💪 How Does Exercise During Pregnancy Help Prepare for Birth?

🛠️Build Strength for Labor and Postpartum Recovery

Building muscle isn’t just about aesthetics. Pregnancy puts unique demands on your body, and strength training can help reduce the impact of those demands and prepare you for labor, postpartum recovery, and motherhood in general. Exercises targeting the pelvic floor, glutes, and core are especially helpful!

🔋Improve Endurance for Labor Stamina

Labor is basically the Ironman of life events – it’s long, unpredictable, and requires physical and emotional stamina.  Working out, especially cardio-based exercises, can help build the stamina you need to take on one of the biggest athletic events of your life.

💥Boost Confidence and Mental Toughness

If you’ve ever pushed yourself to do an extra rep or sprint, you know the mental battle of pushing through discomfort.  The same mental toughness you’ve developed while pushing through challenging workouts can help you manage contractions and stay focused during labor.  Exercise reminds you that you’re resilient and capable of overcoming challenges—an excellent mindset to carry into the birth room.

🤔 What Prenatal Fitness Can’t Do: Limitations of Exercise in Birth Prep

🔐Exercise Can’t Guarantee an “Easy” Birth

Here’s the truth: no matter how many squats, deadbugs, or pelvic opening exercises you do, birth is inherently unpredictable.

Sometimes, even when you’ve done “all the right things” — from staying active to practicing pelvic floor relaxation and pushing techniques — your baby might have their own agenda.  They could take their time, find a cozy (but less-than-ideal) position, or throw a curveball that no amount of preparation could prevent.

The goal of working out during pregnancy isn’t to guarantee a picture-perfect birth.  It goes so much deeper than that, including the health benefits for you and your baby, strengthening your mind and body, helping you adapt to whatever comes your way, and recover faster postpartum.

🔀Fitness Doesn’t Replace Mental and Emotional Preparation

Birth isn’t just a physical marathon—it’s a mental one, too. Think of it this way: your body may be the star athlete, but your mind is the coach calling the plays. 📣

It’s natural to feel some fear or uncertainty about labor and delivery, but letting fears linger unchecked can create tension that works against your body’s efforts during birth.  That’s right – mental tension can translate into physical tension, and birth is about letting gooooo.

Learn techniques like breathing exercises, visualization, or even mindfulness practices to help your mind stay grounded when things get intense.

Take time to explore and address fears. Are you worried about the pain? The unpredictability? A specific complication? Start by writing them down. Then, work through them with a trusted provider, birth doula, or childbirth educator (hi lol!)

Besides recognizing fears, take a look at your habits.  Are you a people pleaser?  Do you tend to avoid confrontation, get overwhelmed, or shut down under pressure or stress?  Not the best with boundaries? (eek, same)  These will have an impact on your birth experience.

Birth is not the time to prioritize other people’s comfort or desires over your own.  You deserve an experience where your needs, preferences, and voice are front and center.

Start practicing self-advocacy now, whether it’s setting boundaries with advice-givers or clearly communicating your wishes with your birth team.

🎓Working Out During Your Pregnancy Doesn’t Replace the Need for Birth Education

Knowledge isn’t just power – it’s peace of mind, and often the missing piece of the birth prep puzzle.

Understanding the stages of labor, learning about medical interventions, understanding coping techniques, creating a birth plan, and so much more are equally important as physical and mental prep.

A note about birth plans (or maps as I like to call them): a birth plan isn’t about scripting every moment (because birth is unpredictable, as we’ve discussed). Instead, it’s a tool to communicate your preferences, values, and wishes to your birth team. It might include details about your ideal environment, pain management preferences, and how you’d like to handle unexpected scenarios.

🔎 Combine Fitness and Education for a Positive Birth Experience

🤸🏻‍♂️Move with Intention

While fitness alone can’t guarantee an easier birth, incorporating intentional movement into your routine can set you up for success. Exercises like squats, lunges, and yoga flows strengthen your body, improve flexibility, and support optimal baby positioning.

🧏🏻‍♀️Listen to Your Body

Pregnancy isn’t the time to push through pain or overexert yourself. Fitness during pregnancy should feel good, not grueling. Focus on movements that build strength and mobility while tuning into your body’s needs and respecting it’s limits.
